Day 1 - Activity 1 - Week 1 - Summer Learning Journey

The Legend of New Zealand

  1. Gisborne is the first city in the world to see the sunrise because it is 496.3 kilometers away from the International Date Line.
  2. Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand and is home to more than 1/4 of New Zealand population.
  3. New Zealand is the first country in the world to see a new day. Our East Cape is situated just under 500km from the international dateline, meaning we are living in the future!

  2. Kia ora Charlee,

Congratulations on completing your very first activity for this years Summer Learning Journey. I see I have a lot of catching up to do because you have already completed week 1. That is phenomenal, Charlee. You go girl. Maybe you could go and comment on some other students activities and encourage them to start the Summer Learning Journey.

You have shared three very fascinating facts about our country, Aotearoa. I was extremely surprised that Gisborne is the first town in the world to see the sunrise. That means, if you were to take a road trip to Gisborne, you could be the first person out of 8 billion people, living in this world, to see the sunrise on a particular day. That is awesome. It makes me want to visit Gisborne. Have you ever been there before?

I am really excited to read all of your incredible posts that you have worked on today. Keep up the incredible work Charlee.

    Enjoy your holidays,
    Megan :)

    1. Thank you Megan and Sayonara.
I haven't been to Gisborne before but I have a T-shirt from there and it says "Tokomaru bay". My dad has been before because my papa who is his dad is from a maori tribe down there. Thank you for the Questions.

  3. Kia Ora Charlee!

My name is Jordan and like Megan, I am a Cluster Manager for the Summer Learning Journey programme. I work with the cluster Kootuitui, in Papakura.

I just wanted to congratulate you for pumping through the programme, but also wanted to say kia ora as I am from Gisborne! Megan asked if I were Ngāti Porou— I'm struggling to remember, did you mention somewhere that you were Ngāti Porou? I'm actually Tūhoe and Ngāti Kahungunu but have grown up learning all of the waiata of Ngāti Porou and have only spent time on their marae up in Whangara. The East Coast is SO beautiful e hoa, I highly recommend you come down and visit some day— a truly magical place with beautiful beaches and beautiful walks.

Keep up the great mahi, Charlee.

    Ngā mihi,

    Jordan
