Day 5 - Activity 1 - Week 2 - Summer Learning Journey

Off the Menu
My dad likes to fish. Fishing is really fun and it keeps you busy. But it is not fun when you don't catch any fish. I think the rule of fishing is fair. People go out to fish and catch a lot but some people don't catch any.
But I think it is a bit unfair too because people shouldn't be fined just because they overfished.
If my dad came back to my house from a fishing trip and he came back with nothing I will be so disappointed. But if my dad came back from a fishing trip with too much I will be disappointed too.

Do you think it is unfair?

  1. Kia ora Charlee,

Awesome work on completing another SLJ activity, 'Off the Menu' and sharing some reasons why you think that people over fishing shouldn't be charged $100,00.

First of all, I wanted to commend you for being so passionate about this issue. I think it is important that we stand up for what we believe in and this is exactly what you are doing. I agree with you. It is a lot of money to charge people for something they love doing. Quite often people who are what we call 'recreational fishers', only come home with a few fish and sometimes none at all.

I think the problem is with the commercial fishing boats who haul in thousands of fish at a time. This is leading to our population of fish decreasing rapidly and it is a sad sight to see. Commercial fishing boats are our biggest problem and they can make a lot of money. With the fine being as high as $100,000 the commercial fishing boats will be more aware of the problem and likely find another area to fish.

So its a hard issue isn't it. Your Dad may not be the problem as he only goes out fishing to have fun and to put food on your table. However, there are people who go out and abuse their rights and snatch up more than their fair share of fish.

Ka pai on sharing your thoughts and ideas. I really liked reading about what you thought about this issue.

    Ka kite,
    Megan :)
