Day 3 - Activity 1 - Week 3 - Summer Learning Journey

Bird of the Year!
I think the Tui deserves the bird of the year.
The Tui is a native bird of New Zealand. In the middle of the day I see the tui on my pohutukawa tree. It looks do beautiful and it just chirps and sings. The Tui lives in trees and flies around. It also lives in the islands like Stewart Island. Tui's eat Nectar, Fruit and insects.

  1. Hi Charlee,

It's Leslie here, a member of the Summer Learning Journey team.

Well done, on this activity! You've given good information about where Tui's live and what they eat and you've posted some lovely photos. Super!!

I've visited Auckland a number of times to see my daughter, Rachel, and her family but I've never seen a Tui. I hope that I will the next time I come - they're beautiful birds and I especially like the little tuft of white they have below their chin!

The birds in New Zealand are quite different from the birds we have in the part of Canada in which I live. We only have 1 ground-nesting bird and it's called a Kildeer. Our most common birds are crows, grackles, sparrows, finches, cardinals and woodpeckers. We live in a rural area so we get to see many birds every day - we're lucky!!

I hope you're having fun getting outside during this summer holiday as well as working on the SLJ program!!

I'll continue to enjoy reading your blog.

    Cheers,

    Leslie
