Day 2 - Activity 1 - Week 3 - Summer Learning Journey

Bee Informed
The word ‘bumblebee’ is a compound word (bumble + bee). The word ‘bumble’ means to
move or act in an awkward or confused manner.

Bumblebees can fly very quickly. They can reach ground speeds of 15 kilometres per hour (km/h).

Bumblebees are very strong! They carry up to  75% percent of their body weight in food with them to avoid starvation.

Bumblebees can do more work and carry more pollen than other bees, including honeybees. In fact, they can do up to 50 as much work as a normal honeybee.

The number of bumblebees is declining in New Zealand due to a number of factors, including the Honey bee

  1. Hi Charlee,

It's Leslie here, a member of the Summer Learning Journey team.

I'm so glad you've chosen to be a part of this program this summer. Good on you!!

I'm reading your answers in these fill-in-the-blanks questions and I'm afraid that you don't have the correct information. I'd suggest you go back to this activity page, click on the link to the NZ Bumblebee Conservation Trust website, and find the information that's given to you there.

To earn points for this activity, I'm afraid that you'll have to try again.

I'd suggest you take your time doing these activities, Charlee. You don't have to rush! You've already done so many of them.

Have you seen any bees in your neighbourhood this summer? We're in the middle of our winter with our gardens covered in snow, so there aren't any bees buzzing outside my door just now. But we have concerns about our bee populations too because they're also decreasing. We know that if we don't hav bees, we won't have food. They're our plant pollinators, so we're planting flowers in our gardens to attract and feed the bees. Hopefully this will help!!

    I hope you're having a good summer!!

    Cheers,

    Leslie
