Day 4 - Activity 3 - Week 4 - Summer Learning Journey

I think it is fair that Machu Picchu is banned to tourist because the country needs peace because would you like it if somebody came into a small country you live in and took so much photos of you and around. I know I wouldn't.

I agree in your opinion it is kinda creepy having someone taking random photos of you, If someone did that to me I would straight away tell that person to delete it or tell him/her to ask for permission before taking pictures, What would you do if someone took photos of you with no permission? keep up the good work!

    Kind regards

  3. Hi Charlee,

It's Leslie here, a member of the Summer Learning Journey program. This activity looks at the problem of having too many visitors to a sensitive site, like Machu Picchu. I think there are probably concerns about having too many visitors to some special areas of your country as well.

I think you've misunderstood the decision by Peru - they've decided to limit the number of visitors to this ancient city, not ban visitors entirely. This is a an ancient, sacred place where people no longer live. The problem with having too many visitors is the wear and tear on the earth pathways and on the ancient ruins. So the government of Peru has decided to try to prevent more damage from happening by reducing the number of people who are coming to see this magical place.

Many countries, including yours and mine, are concerned about too much tourism in places where the earth or the creatures living in an area are being badly affected. It's wonderful that people are interested in travel and in seeing the big, wide world but it isn't necessarily a healthy thing for the planet to have so many people flying in planes, on trains and cruise ships, using fossil fuel and creating rubbish wherever they go.

Hmmmm... we have some big changes to make in how we live on our planet, don't we? I think we'll get this figured out and we'll do a better job of it. We just have to work at creating good attitudes and good behaviours...

I hope you're having a very good summer!! I'll continue to enjoy reading your blog.

    Cheers,

    Leslie
